This video is a cover of “AUS23 (1:1)”, an instrumental composition reminiscent of Ludovico Einaudi by Ferrari driver, Charles Leclerc.
In my last drop, I mentioned that I was hoping to fly to Canada this month to see my bestie. Unfortunately, IRCC refused my visa application so that’s not happening. I was and still am devastated because it means another year of not being able to hug and be in the same room as her. This and some professional challenges have made this month not great for me mentally.
On the bright side, I had fun at the Singapore GP this year! I’ve been thinking that this year would be my last but I enjoy my time with my F1 gang too much to give this up. Other than the on-track action, I also got to watch Culture Club and Robbie Williams perform and both performances were excellent. A cathartic experience was what I needed and a cathartic experience was what I got when I heard “Angels” live.

In other news, one of my favourite artistes
started a Substack! I was pleasantly surprised to get new emails from her after so long, I subscribed to her mailing list around the time her album Primal Heart was released and that newsletter was definitely an inspiration for me to eventually start my own. I have another post in my drafts that I’ll publish later in the month. In the meantime, here are my 3 favourite performances by this criminally underrated artiste who has been killing it for over a decade. (And here’s a YouTube playlist with all the songs.)“Two Way Street” (Live at Sing Sing Studios)
Album: Vows (2011)
More favourite tracks: “Cameo Lover”, “Something in the Way You Are”, “Posse”
I don’t know what it is about this song that entrances me so, both in this performance and the album version. If I loved it less, I might be able to write about it more.
“Top of the World” (Live at the Adrienne Arsht Center with Nu Deco Ensemble)
Album: Primal Heart (2018)
More favourite tracks: “Everybody Knows”, “Past Love”, “Black Sky” (Reimagined version), “Lightyears”
I’m so glad this video exists because, without it, I wouldn’t have been introduced to my favourite orchestra of all time, the Miami-based Nu Deco Ensemble. This ensemble includes modern music staples like electric guitar and synths to your traditional classical orchestra, collaborating with boundary-pushing artistes including Jacob Collier, Kishi Bashi, and Tank & the Bangas with killer arrangements to great effect. Primal Heart was such a great era with many reimagined versions of songs, a wonderful newsletter written by Kimbra that really brought you into her creative process, and also this really cool website with samples from the album that you could use to create your own music.
“Save Me” (Live at Glasshaus)
Album: A Reckoning (2023)
More favourite tracks: “Foolish Thinking”, “Personal Space”, “I Don’t Want to Fight”
The raw vulnerability in this album is so refreshing in today’s pop music landscape, and this lead single captured that best. The lyrics and melody envelop me in the feeling that I’m not alone in my pain and struggles. I have since covered this song as well.
If you’ve made it this far, thank you for reading and I hope you’ll be here again. I usually publish a new drop at the end of every month. Here’s a YouTube playlist with all the songs I shared, and here’s a picture of me holding up a banner I made for my favourite F1 driver Esteban Ocon at the Singapore Grand Prix.
LoL,
rae
That AUS23 cover is fantastic
